Title: My first roman bell...
Post by: Techony on August 30, 2011, 01:07:35 PM
...on the back of a coin

Found this fragment yesterday on our local farm. It definitely 'looks' bronze to me, but the detail seems too good compared to my usual grots. I've tried Googling for a match, but to no avail. So, any input on the ID would be very welcome.

Thanks for looking...

Nice going Tony and the reason it's in good nick is probably a result of the silver dipping it once had, this is the beasty or a variation of it;

It looks as if it was a contemporary forgery of a Denarius as it lacks the official S.C. from the back which would denote it as a bronze coin.

Excellent ID, Thanks for the link Geoff. When Alan (HM) saw it, he also thought Antoninus Pius and had a hunch it was a denarius. Maybe I'll believe him next time  ;D

Well done - shame about the damage. And nice ID Geoff.

It wouldn't surprise me if this is silver - several of mine have come out of the ground a similar colour.

That's true Peter I just realised it wouldn't be THAT colour even if it was copper alloy after 2000 years. I have a Denarius of his which is low grade silver and has leached copper.

Fascinating, thanks guys.

And Alan, my ID'ing skills are getting better all the time. Wasn't the first thing I said when it came out of the ground: "Its a roman"  ;D ;D ;D
