A HAUL of gold sovereigns found by two schoolgirls stashed beneath a hedge is to go under the hammer 35 years after it was uncovered. The six-year-olds discovered the hoard while looking for something in which to put wild flowers in the summer of 1974.

For three decades the 42 sovereigns and five half sovereigns have lain safely in a bank vault after an inquest declared the find treasure trove and ordered it to be returned to the girls who found it.

But now it is to go under the hammer at Tennants Spring Coin sale in Leyburn and the money raised split between the childhood pals, Marie Palliser and Vanessa Spiteri.

Mrs Palliser - née Wilkinson - said: "We were picking wild flowers to take home to our mothers and we began looking for something to put them in.

"At the bottom of a hedge we found a jar which we thought had pennies in it. We tipped the coins into Vanessa's purse, planning to share them out when we got home. But they were quite irrelevant really. We were more interested in the jar."

It is though the haul could have been stashed for safekeeping by a a soldier who was called up to serve in World War I and did not return.

What a lovely surprise for those girls to be "eventually" paid out but I wonder if the value of those coins has increased or decreased over the last 35 years!

Still, I wouldn't mind a share of it  ;)

well the answer for value in comparison would be this.
if sold in 1974 you could have bought a house for say £6000 quid or so gold price was slightly lower then  (not less than half of now though) so think they could have been sitting on small house between them now worth £120,000.
BUT COINS ARE ONLY WORTH AROUND £10,000 APPROX NOW!!!
