Hi Doc

got these two today, and the one on the right was a surface find!! Any chance of an iD beyond it being an Eddie!

cheers & thanks again for taking the time to research them.

The one on the left looks like York mint - the one on the right is Edward I (trifoliate crown) and london mint.

Not an easy one Alan.

My best guess is a Richard II penny, York mint, Spink 1690

thanks doc, i'm happy with that suggestion as at least 3 more richard 11's came up at the rally, and we were only on 1 field, so it fits the profile!

much appreciated indeed, have a great w/e

I was going to agree with you, but I think I can see a cross on the king's breast - In the Wren book, that says (coupled with York) that it's an Ed III post-treaty period coin - can you see that mark, or am I just seeing things?

No, I agree it's there (or possibly a lis), but Richard II Spink 1690 also can have a cross or lis on the breast. The two coins are very similar.

These examples on UKDFD are not in great condition, but here's Edward III:

http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=16296&cat=27

and here's Richard II:

http://www.ukdfd.co.uk/ukdfddata/showrecords.php?product=19878&cat=26

To me, the Richard II coins look a bit rougher in execution than the Edward III, but in essence it all hinges on whether that is a 'W' or a 'C' in front of the 'A' in the king's name. I think I can see the flat side of the closed 'C' but it isn't certain.

I can't believe with your eyes, Alan, that you found it on the surface!  Smiley

Well done.
