A pair of boots believed to have belonged to Oliver Cromwell are to be sold at auction in Berkshire. The 60cm-high (24in) boots had belonged to the late John Fane, a descendant of the 8th Earl of Westmorland, whose collections are being sold.

The historic footwear is expected to fetch £500 at the sale at Donnington Priory, Newbury, on Thursday. They had previously been displayed at Wormsley Park, Oxfordshire, Mr Fane's former home.

Will Richards, of auctioneers Dreweatts, said: "They're in quite good condition and were very sturdily made. "There are many collectors of items like these, as they fall into both the historical and militaria areas of collecting. "We've had a lot of interest in the whole collection."

The boots fell into the ownership of Mr Fane in 1954 when he inherited Wormsley Park country house.

Although there is no proof the boots belonged to Cromwell, a previous owner of the house, Colonel Adrian Scrope, was a known Parliamentarian and the story has been passed down through the centuries.  Colonel Scrope was a member of the Parliamentarian Army during the Civil War and signed Charles I's death warrant.

The sale is taking place on Thursday 26 November

£500 for Cromwells boots? That sounds a bit cheap, I would of thought £5000 would be more like it, or was he the Emelda Marcos of the 17th century and there are hundreds of pairs about the place.
