Title: Re: here's a strange one Post by: handyman [Alan} on September 27, 2016, 02:27:37 PM alright AL Morrocan cast bronze falus.......the date is islamic calender ;) thanks nobby, i had some suspicion that it may be islamic calendar and indeed said so to my detecting buddy when it came out. So it dates to 1872. its an interesting find for middle england! thanks Wagis for your input as well. cheers Title: Re: here's a strange one Post by: wittsy1 on September 27, 2016, 03:40:00 PM A fascinating find, well done to you sir.

Title: Re: here's a strange one Post by: Resurgam on September 27, 2016, 07:03:50 PM Yep, I believe that it is a Moroccan 4 falus bronze coin. Spelled with an "F" and not a "Ph"! :D

Title: Re: here's a strange one Post by: probono on September 28, 2016, 12:52:14 PM Well some one has just found some roman coins in Japan (and I haven't been there, so I didn't drop them), so given people visit Morocco and buy stuff, it's an unusual, but not totally unexpected find :)
Title: Re: here's a strange one Post by: Resurgam on September 28, 2016, 01:08:13 PM But why would Arabs have the star of David on their coinage?
Title: Re: here's a strange one Post by: handyman [Alan} on September 28, 2016, 03:38:54 PM During the 18th and 19th century, North Africa was colonized by France, UK, Spain and Italy. As the location of the find spot is not very far from a barracks used by the british army, in the 18th and 19th century, i would venture to suggest that the coin was dropped by a soldier returning to barracks after the campaign. Interestingly, my colleague found another one today, in the same field!.
As for the roman coins found in Japan, i read that story and think its a very interesting discovery indeed. cheers Title: Re: here's a strange one Post by: Val Beechey on September 29, 2016, 11:28:02 PM Just about as easy to understand as a Roman dagger being found on Oak Island.
I wondered the same as Resurgam about the Star of David on a Morrocan coin. Love finds like that. Well found Al Title: Re: here's a strange one Post by: Resurgam on September 30, 2016, 03:03:34 PM Yeh Val, I have a little bronze coin that I picked up in a Spanish flea market and I thought that was Jewish; that is until someone educated me. Perhaps the six pointed star has symbolism other than the Jewish "Star of David".
Title: Re: here's a strange one Post by: Notaclue on September 30, 2016, 07:51:39 PM Yep, known as "The seal of Solomon"....
