As the little cherubs head back to school and my colleagues settle into the stressful routines. I decided to enjoy the good weather - much to the envy of those i work with - on the fields.

Yesterday, i thought i got a nice button, but on cleaning today, it turns out to be a trade weight.
Today, just a few hours this afternoon, resulted in the usual button, buckle and balls, plus a dear hammy, sunbathing on the surface!

Any help in ID of trade weight and hammy, is much appreciated.

Now, the serious question .... do i go back to work tomorrow, or enjoy the fields ....... methinx i know the answer!

Great finds Alan. I can see where you're going with the cut half, but I think it's John, class 5b2, Norwich mint, moneyer Gifrei.

Thanks ever so much, Peter .... as per usual, its much appreciated.

I was intrigued in the spelling of the moneyer at Northampton Giferei and that at Norwich Gifrei .... and it made me think that its probably the origin of the name Geoffrey. Interestingly, the welsh spelling of Geoffrey is Sieffre.
Now this could be a whole new topic in itself!

Nicely winkled Alan Wink

No it's not the origin though possibly a derivation, "Geoffrey of Monmouth" b1100 and "Geoffrey of Anjou b938" both pre-date the coin and the name was popular in Norman France before 1066 and seems to originate from Germany.
A popular saying in the 17/18thC was "on St Geoffrey's Day" used in the same way as "When the cows come home", as Geoffrey is one of the few names that has no Saint with the same name. (and anyone who knows one, will not be surprised by that Grin)

Thanks for that young Geoff. As always, you are a mine of information. I'm just wondering if the 'germanic' version Geoffrey, was 'celticised' as Sieffre. We shall never know .... but it is food for thought.

Cheers & thanks
