There is no hole, it is a solid non ferrous metal, possibly bronze. It is definately not iron, brass or copper and for it's size is quite heavy.

OK well seeing as I'm having more joy with artefacts than coins, here's my 2 peneth worth.
Many Roman and medieval items are a touchy feely thing when it comes to id and we only have two photographs but from what I can see I would say definitely not Roman and more likely to originate within the last 100 years.
You say " possibly bronze. It is definitely not iron, brass or copper"  Huh I don't even know any metallurgists who would make that claim Grin Safer to say it's a copper alloy.
Not a pot lid as it isn't finished off as a pot lid would be, nor does the "dish" part look thick enough by the way it has bent, bronze tends fracture when cold so doubtful if it's a cast object.
So I'm afraid going just from the photos.......modern junk Cry

Thanks for the ID Chef - I am a newbie at this and am not a metalagist, didn't even know new pennies were not solid copper Smiley Was good while it lasted me thinking I had a roman item. I will keep digging.
