Intriguing ??? is there a hole at the end of the grove? Sorry Herbie but I can't see any similarity to an archers ring, the grove isn't running all the way across and I can't see how it would offer any finger protection.
What diameter is it?

Big question is ....... is it a finger ring or is it something mechanical  ???

Perhaps like the thimble, its meant for someone to wear whilst pushing sharp objects through tough
material such as leather. hence the groove as a guide?
Just a thought.

That's why I asked about whether it had a hole as it is very similar. No no joke Dan, the Victorian/Edwardian versions were solid metal rings.

unfortunatley dan we all have romantic notions that all the stuff we find are all pre medieval and once belonged to the king  :D
I'll give you an example:- a celtic bronze casting id ('dby the flo mind you) as the head on an animal------turns out it was a part off a ballcock from a water trough
and then there was the ancient greek horse found circa 800 bc......only it was made probably in the 1980's as a tourist peice and sold on ebay by bucket full :D

I'm just intrigued, I can not find any medieval rings that conform to that design, the hoop is far too wide for a true stirrup ring, also they tend to have a stone of some type mounted at the top of the bezel ???
Did you send him the ring or a photograph? If you sent him the ring then why he couldn't record it at the same time lord knows.
But as you'll be able to see an actual FLO the mystery should be solved and don't worry you've done everything 100%.
I'll await  the FLO report with interest ;)

I tend to agree with Geoff and Will, I'ts bugging me and I may be wrong ,
but I'm sure that I've seen something like this before but I can't  for the
life of me remember where.
