Title: Have you ever seen....
Post by: Doug on April 30, 2014, 10:18:23 PM
............anything thing like this before, and what is its purpose? (I found it a few years ago, a reworked silver coin)

That is unusual Doug, apart from decorative use i.e pendant or something similar, I can't think of any other use

Hebries on the money Doug - pretty sure it's a cock fighting spur.

Interesting find and I imagine wherever you found it may produce more lost coinage if that's where the fights were held.

Cheers

Neil

Thank you for the various possibilities of the artefact.

Location found.

The field lies alongside the old Roman Road of the Fosse-Way, item found well inside the field and away from the road but on what used to be a footpath (now moved to the edge of the field). Just to the right of the find spot is a natural spring which would have been an attraction in times gone by for drinking water.

I seem to think I ID the coin to be a Spanish one, not quite sure now how I came to that conclusion now!

Posible use for the item which I looked at but could not find any comparison.

Ear wax remover.

Nail cleaner.

Cock fighting spur.

A piece of 'art work' to worn around the neck. A lot of work seems to have gone into making the item.

A fishing lure, attracter, hook, would have been a very expensive one!

The shape of the item looks to have been made for a very special job of work or for purely to look nice. (bling)

Medieval ring pull, now that would have been find of a life time.

I will bring it with me the next rally I attend so you can view the item for yourself.

what did the FLO identify it as?

what did the FLO identify it as?

Alan.

No ID because there was no comparison other than it was made from possibly a silver coin, although it had the shape of a fighting cock spur it appeared to have no means of attaching it to the birds leg other than through the hole in the top. (string)

The cock fighting spur is the nearest I have come across in the overall shape of the item.

My self personally I,ve owned game chickens I had many old English game also foreign fighting birds and I don't think it is a spur the shape is wrong also like there has been said previously the attachment at the top doesn't match with what they normally use leather straps would be the attachment between the spur and the leg so I don't think it could be.

Just my opinion  ;D

Still nice find tho

This is a cock spur I found a while ago, more 'manufactured' and would have fit over the bird's own spur, yours looks older Doug still think it's a spur personally, the bend in it may have been caused by its time in the ground.
Fantastic unusual item whatever it is  :)

I must admit when a cock spur was first suggested a few years ago it did not fit my description of one.

It is definitely been made with a sweeping bend and a very curved and sharp point on mine but the fact it is made from what looks like a silver coin just adds to the mystery?

As you say Doug its a mystery and I suppose we'll never know for sure, it can be frustrating at times when you can't figure out what something is or was used for, but that's all part of the thrill of metal detecting.
