After recently taking part in my first rally and indeed the first time detecting, it is definitely something I would like to do again.

I was lucky enough to find a hammered silver coin and well that sort of got me hooked especially when researching the history behind it.

I don`t own my own Detector and was wondering if anyone has anyone has any advice or tips on what the best machine for a keen beginner,

I was amazed of how many different `types` there were.

I am not looking to spend a fortune but also understand that cheap isn`t always best.

Welcome to the forum Spooner and a big well done on getting your first Hammy on your first outing (there are some who will hate you for that Cheesy).
I'm afraid in metal detecting "cheap" is never the best alternative, but as to which model will come down to how much you are willing to spend.
What machine were you using when you found the hammy?

You'll open up a can of worms! Most think their machine is best.

It depends how much you want to spend and how technical or simple you want it.

One beginner I know has Teknetics G2 and is getting along fine. A good all rounder is Teknetics Omega 8000 with T2 coil.

They are lightish and simple.

There are a few in the Laser/Tesoro make that are simple/capable like Laser Hawkeye.

You need to give us a bit more info as to budget and where you mostly intend to detect, etc

This might be of interest to you.

Its a good starter machine but as has been mentioned, if your interested in searching beaches then don't bother with this one.
You'll need to be a bit more specific as to the type of locations your likely to be detecting to make sure you get the best advice
so as to avoid spending on something that's not compatible with what you want to do.

Cheers
