I have personal cover with brittania,(old green flag ) it covers any vehicle either as driver or passenger for both myself and partner. Get you home if you car is nicked or have a illness that stops you from driving .Unlimited breakdowns in a year .. Both AA and RAC used to have a 6 call out limit , after that it was charged at normal rate (something stupid like £6 a mile).
Its as Bob has, a stripped down cover, no homestart, (i have a garage full of spanners !) and they dont come out for stupids like flat tyres or bulbs.Last years premium was £120 ish
I gave RAC the heave ho after leaving me stranded on the side of the road for 7 hrs in midwinter with a dead motorbike. (The van came within the hour as stated but the recovery truck came much later)
personally I would go for the most affordable as its usually the same tow truck for them all.

the RAC left us stranded on the wrong side of london with no cash because we were on way back from european trip
