Good evening,

My partner and I want to get into detecting. We recently moved to a new house in northern Carmarthenshire which came with a couple of acres. Digging some beds for my potatoes I've already managed to find a couple of quite old coins (no detector needed), but that particular area has been used as a rubbish tip, and I'm pulling out iron, glass, and and other junk by the bucket-full.

As well as our own land, we're keen on trying some beaches, so we have decided to buy a few detectors.

After a bit of reading around the forum, we've decided to go for the XP Goldmaxx (for the iron rich part of our land), a Sovereign GT (for beach and general land detecting) which I've just purchased along with a Detech SEF 12"x 15" coil, and also considering a dedicated beach PI detector (looking at c scopes at the moment - are they all more or less the same?).

I figured these three would enable us to both be detecting wherever we are since they all have their strengths in slightly different areas, as well as giving us a good chance of finding something.

I understand the requirements in terms of permits for beaches, but am not sure about other public areas. Is detecting allowed in national parks, moors, and common land in general?

One other thing I'm not sure about is if it's ok to submerge the Sovereign GT's coil (or the SEF) in water/surf?

Any other general tips for beginners would also be very welcome.

Hello and welcome to DW. Grin

Sounds like you've got things pretty well organised, good luck. Detecting in National Parks isn't allowed except by prior permission being granted and that doesn't happen often. All land is owned by someone and permission should be obtained. Places like Moor land and Common land is usually owned by councils or big estates or even big companies. Best of luck  and happy hunting.
Don't forget Insurance. Wink

Thanks for your reply Val.

Is insurance a requirement for detecting on beaches and/or other private land?

Not for beaches but highly advisable for land detecting. Can be obtained from NCMD on line and costs about £9 or there abouts. Will be needed if you want to attend any Rallies and gives you good cover, just in case.

You'll probably have a couple of weeks at least, till we get to know our MDs Wink

Last night I bought a CS 4PI off flea bay, so two down and one more to go. Looking forward to having a play with the new toys!
