Title: Any thoughts on the Minelab 705?
Post by: Dusty on October 13, 2014, 09:27:56 PM
Just wondering what people think of the 705. Must have been living under a rock because until last week I'd not heard of this particular model.  ::)

Long story short, the brother in law has been pestering me to swap his 705 for my newly acquired F75 standard. He seems to think his detector would be better suited to the trashy parks I frequent and has better discrimination, ID and good for coins. Not said yes or no yet.

Anyone fancy wading in on this one?

One of the nicest machines I've ever used and can't truthfully say I've found more with any other machine, just ask John-F what they can find ;D

It gets a big thumbs up from me. I had the x terra 70 for a couple of years and it did me proud, then went off around the houses trying various other machines inc Explorer SE, Etrac and T2, to name but a few, but I came back to the x terra 705 because its such a great allrounder. As with all machines, I think the best one is the one you have most confidence in.

Well you chaps have caught me on the back foot! I was half expecting a resounding NO. The mighty Fisher taking a back seat, who'd have thought..  :o

I suppose the big question is - is it fair to say the Minelab would fair better in trashy parks than the Fisher? Don't mind dropping the hammer on the swap, just want to make sure it's going to be beneficial for me and not walking blindly into a deal I'll later regret..

Cheers chaps.

Oh. John, what did you find?

It obviously depends on the coil if for use in trashy areas then I would probably plum for the 18.75kH elliptical but even with the standard coil if you use two tone all metal then you can hear the good amongst the bad. ;)

Still not decided yet.

In all fairness BIL has suggested that we visit someone he knows with an old test bed to try the detectors out, seems fair.

I'm half hoping the Minelab comes off a tad worse - F75 + cash adjustment negotiations  ;D

The f75 is a beast in the right hands, and it will work the wet sand also, very light, and the batteries last for ever, i had a 705, and thought the build quality was very poor, still a good machine, but I think the 75  is better then the 705, i love minelab machines, and still use a gt, but like most machines, they take some learning.

Fair comment Jon.

I've got a terrible compulsion when it comes to detectors - I get drawn in with the advertising BS and find it difficult to resist that something new be it new features, looks etc.

My other half says when detectors are in the mix I've got grass hopper syndrome..  If her in doors took time to calculate how much of my rainy day savings I've wasted on detectors I'd be sectioned, very possible castrated and divorced  :o

do you really need 28 notches ? the cheaper machines may be more suitable with less notches
