I am trying to determine the age of the site I am on. Thanks in advance ;D ;)

Title: Re: Bits of pottery I found, an oyster shell and a melted piece of glass Post by: Chef Geoff on February 19, 2016, 10:16:07 AM Shell tempered ware has been around as far back as the late iron age with an explosion in use around the late 2nd century though as Humfrey rightly says it was also common in the medieval period and is synonymous with hand built (local) pottery whereas your other sherds look to be wheel thrown and of a better manufacture with the larger pieces looking very "amphora" like and so could be Roman but all are nice and sharp so haven't been rolling around in plough soil very much,
The colour of the glass "could" be Roman though could equally be from a 1920's pop bottle ??? Likewise the oyster shell isn't definitive in dating as although found on Roman sites oysters were the staple of the poor right in to the 19th century. At the end of the day your local museum/archaeology group or FLO are the people to ask as they will know the fabric of local pottery and sherds are difficult if not impossible to id via photographs due to colour and texture playing such an important part ;) Title: Re: Bits of pottery I found, an oyster shell and a melted piece of gl Post by: Humfrey on February 19, 2016, 04:22:07 PM You are absolutely right Geoff the larger pieces are indeed Amphora looking.

Judging by how well it looks to have been made I would go with post-medieval |
