Title: *Official* Detecting Wales Rally - Hawkesbury Upton
Post by: Tafflaff (Rob) on November 09, 2014, 08:51:43 PM
Ok after a quick discussion with the farmers wife this evening, we have an invite back to Hawkesbury Upton.

Last year saw a cracking variety of finds including, button, buckles, seal matrix, Roman fibula a smattering of hammered coins and...Oh yeah 2 gold coins  :o

There will be a mixture of stubble and pasture and again the farmer and his family will be joining us to see what goodies come up. Please show them your finds as they have no interest in taking them off you - they are just a really friendly family with a great interest in whats in their ground.

I know last year many detectorists gave the farmer's kids a collection of buttons and buckles, pre decimal coinage, they were so pleased.

This will be a DetectingWales.com members only rally and I'm afraid everyone attending must be over 16 years of age. Usual terms and conditions apply. Everyone who attends does so at their own risk and we recommended that everyone has civil liability insurance. If you are a member of a club you will probably already have this. Please check.

PLEASE READ CAREFULLY

The location of the rally will be sent by private message to everyone who has signed up the day before the rally and the rally fee is £7.00 as normal.

Sorry, I'm a newbie to rallies...are dogs allowed?

I have a 1 year old border collie that I  work on a local farm on sheep, cattle, and goats...she is well manured and I can hold her off other peoples stock.

She tends to go off looking for mice nests to dig up whilst I'm detecting...

Manofross - I sometimes have to bring my mutt along as nobody else to look after him. I use a coiled lead like Deborah on here used. I show it to the farmer and get permission otherwise he status in the car and gets walks off the farm periodically. You can get one from dogsbody in Hereford down Barr's Court road they are on the wall by the window. I had to make mine but these are the real thing and just what you need as they don't get around the dogs legs and still give him some range while you are digging and swinging. Get over there and by one. I can get one for you if you b like. All farmers I have asked are quite happy to allow mine out when they see he is controlled with the lead.

Da Monkey, thanks a lot for the information, but I'll wait to see what Tafflaff can find out. So far as a lead goes my Meg has very sharp teeth and in one bite almost totally severed her leather lead when I tied her to a sheep race.

Ok I've checked the situation with dogs on the farm and its a yes for well behaved dogs, on a lead and of course any mess is cleaned up (goes without saying I know).  :)

Thanks a lot Tafflaff for the info, but regretably I don't think I can swing a metal detector and a dog at the same time. I know that Da Monkey has a flexible lead, but it wouldn't work with Meg...she loves to run free. I can get her up to 25mph behind the car (without a lead)!

Enjoyed the rally today , not much luck myself but Mike showed me  bronze/copper pin about 4" long which might be a Roman dress or hair pin. In the Hattatt Roman book there is one very similar with the dogleg at the top but a ring instead of the patterned top on Mike's. If I am correct it is a very nice find. For anyone who has a copy of the book it is on page 443 Fig.15 item 92. They are described as 1st to 4th century.

                                                            Pat. ;) ;)
