''On it like Sonic''

« on: February 25, 2012, 06:08:48 PM »

Went for a liitle bimble with my garrett walking stick this afternoon, the ground is starting to be a little bit quiet now but towards the end of my session, i managed to find some sort of dagger/scabbard.

It has one sharpened edge, the scabbard seems to be made out of lead!!

any ideas guys/gals ?

Interesting find Nick Huh obviously been snapped off by machinery by the look of it so the rest should still be there somewhere.
What condition of soil did it come out off, pasture, arable, water meadow? if the soil is not continually water logged such as an area around a spring then I have my doubts if it's any older than 20 years or so, as the leather would have long rotted away. But if it was from a waterlogged deposit such as peat then it could date to far earlier.

Hi Chef

It was on an incline, damp ground close to an old drainage ditch. I think this field has been ploughed over the years but may have been pasture dont quote me on that, i did have a scout about the area to see if i could find the rest to no avail. just over the ditch is what i think to be an ancient orchard again dont quote me on that, and was roughly a few hundred meteres down hill from an old iron age hill fort

When I first looked at it I thought how much it looked like a Nazi dagger but the boyscout motif confuses the issue. However it seems to be a bit of both Wink
