Watching an old Time Team yesterday Empress Matilda was mentioned in the dig.

A quick Google I see she had coins minted under her own name.

Anybody ever find one?

Although Spinks list her under "Uncertain issues'.

I found what I thought was a cut half of Matilda, but after seeing the PAS report it turns out to be a Stephen, Watford  penny. Still a nice find and a first for me.

I know the brothers who found them and also seen a few from the hoard that the museum didn't want  Roll Eyes .

they had just under £100k in 1980/81  , now that's a serious chunk of change today , back then it was like winning the lottery  Shocked Shocked

Nowadays Cardiff Museum would have had the lot - it was from up the Wenallt somewhere - probably some more along there somewhere Smiley

Rare as hens teeth those things though - most of the references in Spink are from that hoard.

Doug Matilda was striking coins at mints she had control of, Bristol was one of them, Stephen was in power at the time, a civil war for the throne.

I watched a documentary about Matilda on tv, iv managed to track it down on YouTube if your interested its worth a watch, its a little slow but gets interesting a few minutes in  Wink
