Hi all, I found this lead item at the weekend.  It measures about 32-34mm diameter and 10mm high.  I think it might be an old weight but any idea of age?

From the views you show Pete, it looks more like a button.  It also looks like it could be a lead mix but hard to tell from pics.

Hi Val, it certainly looks button shape but it is quite large and the back is flat with no obvious fixing points, it also weighs 56 grams which I believe is 2 ounces so I think it is lead and not a lead alloy.

Ha Ha silly me.  I mistook the blue-tack for a loop at the back.   I can see now, it is flat and yes it does look like it's lead.

There doesn't seem to be much patina on it which suggests it's not that old but what it is, or was, is any ones guess. Maybe a make-shift top for something.  It's unbelievable how many odd bits of lead turn up that look like they had a use in the past but only the maker will ever know what that use was.

I have been searching the PAS database and I have just found one very similar

http://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/384658

It is almost the same diameter and thickness but it is heavier.  From reading the desciption it appears that even the experts aren't sure what these were for just like you said Val.

Oh, and it gives a date of medieval to post medieval - 1066-1800
