Title: Re: ..and now for something completely different Post by: handyman [Alan} on April 02, 2011, 07:18:07 PM diameter 38mm
dont have a set of scales to hand ... will borrow my mates tomorrow!!!! Title: Re: ..and now for something completely different Post by: The Doc on April 02, 2011, 07:46:14 PM Thanks for that Alan. I believe it's a 9th issue 5 Kurush coin, also called a 5 piastres, also called a 200 paras, of Mahmud II (1808-39) of Turkey. The Arabic date on the coin translates to 1833. According to my reference, struck in very debased silver (0.17 fine). The weight should be between 13 and 16 grams.

Title: Re: ..and now for something completely different Post by: waltonbasinman on April 02, 2011, 07:57:12 PM Nice ID Peter and well winkled Alan. Next question Alan. How the heck did that find its way into your field. :-\
Title: Re: ..and now for something completely different Post by: Chef Geoff on April 02, 2011, 08:50:19 PM Kurush? Kurush?....... Infidel :D It's Qirsh. I make the date 1828 and the coin was minted in Egypt. At 39mm it would be a 20 Qirsh.
And I haven't got a book lol Title: Re: ..and now for something completely different Post by: handyman [Alan} on April 02, 2011, 08:53:02 PM is this close??
