Title: any ideas on this
Post by: wagis on August 29, 2016, 07:25:54 PM
Found yesterday, never seen a double sided crucifix before. One side is Jesus on the cross but unsure who is on the other side it looks like a knight with a helmet on. not sure how old but doesn't look really old. other bits found was a spindle whorl and a piece of bronze on a roman patch.

Nice find ;) it looks a interesting piece, its hard to see from the photos what is made of?  is it solid cast and chased?

It's certainly an odd one George. Definitely not a traditional Catholic cross. The crucified figure is wrong, the plaque above him is wrong and as you said the figure on the back is way out. It looks like a female and possibly wearing Egyptian costume.
Interesting find. Love to know more about it.

Just found a site called crosscrucifix.com that has explanations of dozens of different crosses. They're listed in alabetical order and there's one called an 'inhabited cross' seems they were popular in the 18th cent and often had other figures on them including Popes. Maybe that's what's on the back.

Ends of the cross look like stylised fleur de lis, representing the trinity. Sunburst above the head to show he's a king. On the back, either his mum or it's himself after the event as the high priest. Maybe.

Took the crucifix to the FLO and in her words "it appears to be silver gilt and medieval, so will go through the treasure process" I am well pleased

Cheers guys, I thought it was fairly modern as well, it just shows you. I did find the figures a bit strange though. just have to wait now.
