Any chance of a circa date Doc? It is a little copper alloy  button methnks. After some light cleaning a crown and some lettering appeared on my little find! Any ideas? I am hoping it is possible to decipher the lettering with a bit more cleaning. Anyone any ideas as to how to clean it?

Found the button today whilst out with Casa Dos, Dig It, Waltonbasinman and our kind host Farmer Phil. Cheers for the donuts and coke as well Phil!

Are the first two letters R. T. ?

It's hard to see from the pics Jon, have you had a look through UKDFD? You may find something similar there.

I am guessing circa 1700 going by  other examples, the context and the thoughts of Paul(Waltonbasinman) who was beside me when I dug it. The crown (Kings Crown) wasn't visible until the light cleaning was undertaken. Hope to decipher the lettering too.

Looks like the back of the button Jon,so the lettering would more than likely be the makers name,or if there is any remains of guilding it could say,Standard colour,Double or Treble Guilt,or Gold colour, these seem to be the most common,is there any thing on the over side,as for cleaning it i quite often soak them in Citric acid diluted with water in a very weak mixture checking every few minuets, but you need to experiment on a few till you get the hang  of it,the results if your not careful can be drastic. Jon,here's one i found with a crown on it ,some i have found have the prince of Wales feathers on,so i have all ways assumed that it was a royal patronage,by  appointment to a member of the royal family.Date wise i would think 18th -19th century would be about right.
