After seeing and contributing to this thread, I started wondering what really happened to the Midnight Mechanics' gleanings. I mean, if it was spread on certain fields then maybe they would be more 'fertile' (in terms of metal detecting, of course . . . )

They do say that Google is your friend, but after reading this I'm not so sure - and for sure Wiki isn't:

I remember as a child (in the days before detecting) going regularly<excuse the pun ...to a farm to collect veg and milk from Claude whose farm was close to where I was brought up...On day my father said ask Claude for a Manx coin..I was puzzled but I asked Claude for a Manx and I was taken into the kitchen and there was a bucket 1/3 full of coins ..Claude picked the worst 18th century Manx coin he could find and explained that he found the coins walking behind the horse & plough and he said night soil was been carried out to his farm right up to the 1940s..Needless say when I formed the club in the 1980s I took them on this farm and we were rewarded with very nice Georgian and Victorian coinage.. Grin
