I am a carrier for the first couple of hours and then it tends to be dragged by mid afternoon. Trouble is so is the rest of the body by then.

Carry it on my shoulder, moaning profusely. Go out and buy an entrenching tool. Get to a rally. Everyone looks at it and says "We bought one of those....it broke". Use it for an hour. It breaks. Go back to normal spade and star moaning profusely again....

You are right, my detecting arm is fine but think I am getting an RSI from keeping my shovel away from the machine. Anyone make holsters for them? (it's only a draper mini , but when I used the big ones dragging was fine, no probs. )

Because of my athritis I find in hard to hold my shovel over my shoulder or dragging it behind me for any length of time I have to alternate between the two.
