Title: Hand held GPS Post by: Salty (Karl) Cardiff Scan Club on October 10, 2009, 02:54:45 PM Having read a post earlier about recording finds, i fancy getting a bit more detail, instead of saying "somewhere by there" on an OS map.
is anyone out there getting shot of a handheld GPS device, just for grid references, that sort of thing? I don't want to spend a fortune but i don't mind paying for something half tidy. cheers Salty Title: Re: Hand held GPS Post by: Jonola (Jon) on October 10, 2009, 03:00:44 PM I think dearer mobile phones have this as an app. I know there are a couple of threads on here about it somewhere. Waltonbasonman is the one to ask if I remember.

Title: Re: Hand held GPS Post by: rjm on October 10, 2009, 06:27:18 PM A hand held GPS is the best if you can afford one.
However, you can use a car Sat Nav to get the co-ordinates as well. This is done by going into the settings. The Sat nav can also then store in favourite locations and be re-called. On mine I can also give the location a name. I know some Sat Navs are large but I have a Navman (as it's slim and will fit in a shirt pocket) and run a TomTom program on it! Actually it's a good idea to ask the wife to get you a GPS for Xmas !! ;D I'd like a GPS (Countryside Sat Nav actually) that shows footpaths etc.as I do a lot of walking all over the place and it'd be better than having to get maps and carry them. Anyone know if there is such a device out there? Title: Re: Hand held GPS Post by: Tafflaff (Rob) on October 10, 2009, 06:29:10 PM I've seen the one you're on about RJM , they're fantastic aint they! £300 though >:(
Title: Re: Hand held GPS Post by: rjm on October 10, 2009, 06:32:50 PM Where did you see one?
My wife enquired last Christmas but they were somewhat limited in function and more or less just took readings to get you back to start if you were lost. I don't know if there is one that actually shows footpaths like a Sat Nav shows roads etc. If you've seen a more comprehensive one please let me know! That'd be on my Christmas wish list!!!! LOL Title: Re: Hand held GPS Post by: Salty (Karl) Cardiff Scan Club on October 10, 2009, 06:34:19 PM Hi Bob, You now how much i spent lately, i reckon you can ask my misses for me ;), she far less likely to clobber you one.
i was just going to sneak off and get one and hope she didn't notice it in my kit bag. I have go to maplins to get some bits for you Battery meter anyway. I suppose with that new motor of your you can just drive to the spot and get your grid reference ;) ;D What was it they said on Back to the future? " Roads...! Where we are going, we don't need Roads...!" ;D ;D ;) Title: Re: Hand held GPS Post by: Tafflaff (Rob) on October 10, 2009, 06:34:47 PM I have and they are bang on fella.

Title: Re: Hand held GPS Post by: Salty (Karl) Cardiff Scan Club on October 13, 2009, 06:01:45 PM Got one now thanks, I went to Maplin as you suggested Rob, they had the Garmin etrex 360, also end of line, down to £50, the only one they had was on display (locked in a cabinet so brand new ), they couldn't find the box, so i had it for £25 ;D, its W.A.A.S. enabled too, so its accurate to 15ft (allegedly), Downloaded the instructions off the net, all i missed out was a neck strap, I just need to work out what to do with it!!?
Cheers Salty Oh while i remember, i did summon the courage to tell the Mrs Bob, wasn't that bad, for £25 i got away with "The Look" :o ;) Title: Re: Hand held GPS Post by: rjm on October 13, 2009, 06:58:39 PM ;D Karl, Either she loves you too much or she's hiding a guilty secret !!!! ;D LOL
