Title: Brooch ?
Post by: Da Monkey on August 19, 2012, 01:52:49 PM
Hi Guys,

Here you go, found this today when detecting for a guy interested in local history, he was hoping for some Roman evidence and I "think" this may be some, but its an odd shape around the head if it is a brooch...  but has a nice patina, so it's old...

Any ideas ?

Oh yes also found what would have been a nice Viccy Shilling, old head if it hadnt been hit by the plough :(   I dont have one of these in my collection yet and handed it over as agreed, so I still dont LOL...

Sorry to rain on your parade Andy but no I personally don't think it is as the mechanics are all wrong. Unless one of our previous "experts" can enlighten me on how it would work then I'll say "window catch", sorry :-\

I can see why you say Window catch Geoff, like the old ones on a ford anglia quarterlight LOL, but I do think its a good bit older after looking close up, but hey what do I know LOL, OK, so its 5 nil, 5 nil & a ford Anglia quarterlight catch LOL ;D   I'm non comittal at the moment, FLO is around on 13th, will see if I can get the guy to take it in :)

Well guys, it's officially not a window catch !  ;D

It's taken a while to get a definate answer, but here it is ...  (hopefully you can read the attached scan)

The guy I gave it to, showed it to the FLO and had a report back yesterday, looks like it was a Roman brooch afterall, but of an unusual type, so it was definately number 6  :)

WooHooo :)

Well I've got to take my hat of to you Al, I had the thing in my hand and it wasnt like any shape of brooch I'd ever seen in head shape, so must admit I came down on Geoff's window catch side in the end LOL.  The Patina was so deep it just "looked" old, but the patina was a bit odd as well, as it almost glistened and appeared globular on the surface if you know what I mean, I guess this was the corrosion mentioned and just the way it was decaying.

Yes It's good to get closure Nick, it had a few of us stumped a bit, so good to know in the end :)  I can see now the "socket" bit of the trumpet brooch in some of the examples from the link Alan gave, nicely spotted Alan :)

He can't be serious ;D "It's a brooch of an unknown type"?! ye right!
It's not an unknown type at all, it's an Austin A35 type and a quarter light variant, thast what it is ;D
The only way you'll get closure is to find the rest of the window frame   :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Bullseye finished in 1995 so don't think there's much need for an announcer  ::)
