There have been a few posts relating to what we may be missing by not digging iron and the paranoia that goes with it.
This was found by one of my farmers about 20 years ago while he was in his tractor the point was stuck out of the ploughed soil and he stopped and pulled it out because of the puncture risk Shocked
I've borrowed it to get it recorded, I'm slightly out of my comfort zone with this one, but it seems to conform more to an Iron age style and central rib rather than anything later.
So every time your machine blanks or signals iron just think to yourself "I wonder" Grin

on a few of my sites I always dig iron, as the Celts and Saxon made brooches and weapons from iron. I've had a few nice finds over the years, so always worth having a look.

I often think this as I'm getting blanks from the machine but if you dig everything, you'd be all day uncovering farm
implements and the like.
I guess if your working land that doesn't have a lot of iron signals in general and the landscape looks as if it could have been used in the past
(high points in fields, isolated collections of stone in an arable field) then I probably would wonder and be tempted to dig.
Guess in the long run its a matter of personal interpretation but I certainly agree with you that were probably losing a lot of history with over discrimination.

Sounds a good practice Steve, I have to put my hand up and say I don't much to my shame. There used to be an old guy who went to the same club as me (before I became emancipated lol) and he had quite a few iron Roman brooches, just goes to show.
