Title: Lead object for identification Post by: Stanley on April 07, 2019, 10:52:24 AM Hello, I had a nice trip out yesterday with many buttons and a nice Maundy Groat of Charles II. I did find one lead object and I hope someone on here can give me a clue as to purpose and rough date. I have attached two photos.
It is completely lead with no markings outer diameter is 14mm Hole diameter is 8-9mm The shape is toroidal but has a definite ridge on the outermost part. I marked it down as a spindle whorl in the video but I am not sure. Any help much appreciated. Thanks very much Title: Re: Lead object for identification Post by: Val Beechey on April 07, 2019, 03:25:33 PM Hi Stan, yes it’s a Spindle Whorl. They are almost impossible to date accurately and I’m fairly sure they are usual grouped into 2 groups. Plain being the oldest.
Post medieval, 1600’s to present and Pre 1600’s . This is usually decided by plain or patterned. As yours is patterned, there’s your answer ;D. As the name suggests they were used in the spinning process. Title: Re: Lead object for identification Post by: Stanley on April 08, 2019, 05:34:11 PM Thanks Val, nice to have confirmation.
I messed up badly with a coin identification, firstly calling it a Henry, then Edward I before being corrected :) |
