Post by: waltonbasinman on March 24, 2010, 06:01:20 PM Pictured below is the cropmark site of a brand new unrecorded site that came about as a bit of detective work and putting two and two together. Been across to have a look at it today and at first I thought it may be a Roman Villa but having seen the site on the ground as it were and kicking a few molehills I now think it may be a unrecorded Roman Fortlet. Good day me thinks.

When your field walking the area, are you looking for raised embankments etc, a mass of ditches, or better still when field walking what signs do you look for Paul ? ??? Title: Re: You know you,ve had a good day. Post by: waltonbasinman on March 25, 2010, 02:13:01 PM Short grass, very slight earthworks , the sun in the right place and at the right time of day. Most importantly though kick the mole hills and look for pottery. Know every bit of your landscape and have a friendly farmer. First spotted it about two months ago and I was not sure as the snow melted. The sun caught it and I knew there was something their. Found one last year which was trial trenched by some archies late in the year and was dated to the first century AD. Have found loads of new sites over the last five years and that includes two motte and bailey castles. I do love a puzzling landscape.
