Thanks Eric for your help, im sure it is Saxon and a good few other people has said the same.

But there is no argument about this one, its yet to be cleaned, iv had a little go with a cotton bud, but its proving a little tricky, as the dirt is ground right in... any tips anyone? it needs a soak really but im a little worried about that method.
its looking like a hour with a cocktail stick.

Im a little less surprised about this find as this field do give up Saxon all tho only my 2nd item first being a openwork stirrup mount.

I'm green with envy Dale, I've had 3 stirrup mounts from down here in the last few years but nothing personal at all. Well done you Wink

Cheers Smiley Geoff from the field over the years a fair few has popped out, most passed to my uncle as that was what he collected, my detecting partner had the best one with glass eyes, and funny enough he collects army badges, and my dad was a thimble man so the finds was swopped about... but the field has been hammered and hammered over the years by many people, my only other find was 1 button, and little bits of tin foil and lead, but I don't want to knock out to much, its the same field my face mount came from last year, yet again gear is missed Wink

Don't clean it!!

Pass it to an FLO and let them do it professionally, and get it recorded.

There is a whole raft of information they can get out of it if you don't damage it, they may even be able to attribute it to a maker.

That kind of information is so important, and so easily destroyed by cleaning. Saxon artefacts are rare enough that any new info adds loads to the historical record.

Hi Eric,
iv cleaned it as much as im going to with a cotton bud, its looking better but still has remains of mud in the deeper parts what im happy to leave, a lot of the patina has flaked off leaving that horrible light green colour, as the mud and the metal dried out.

Great find Dale, I'd leave well alone if I were you. Trust me I've ruined enough
coins over the past year, by cleaning a little to enthusiastically

Nice saxon.

I like the sterling as well - it's a type I haven't seen before (I'll have to look up Doc's suggestion in my copy of 'Sterling Imitations'. That's the problem with this hobby - you have to keep buying more books to id things!

Definitely a saxon strap end. Nice, but dont clean it any more. It has already started to disintegrate around the edges.

Seal it in a plastic, show it to your local FLO.

Nuff sed

A sterling?Huh probono are you talking about the object I first found.
Cardiffian was a great help he sent the image to his friend Brian Read.
He also said its something he haven't seen before, he has said its most probably a saxon chip carved, but for what he's not sure, maybe fixed to some sort of vessel.

(I really am thinking a mount)

Has anyone got any contacts for Bristols FLO

I was talking about the continental coin Smiley - they're called 'sterlings' or 'esterlings'.
