Categorising the Gallery. below is an idea from Zorro that seemed to be a popular one but never come to fruition.

hi just a thought. i've noticed a lot of people post pics of there finds on the site but most dont find their way to the gallery usually just entered under "todays finds"etc
if the general finds under "gallery" were sub divided into specific groups ie.
 coins -  celtic, roman,saxon,hammered,milled
artifacts- celtic ,roman etc
this may encourage people to "file" their finds .not only that but we'd have our very own data base and research facility.
if someone finds a Elizabeth l groat thats a bit grotty and they file it under coins- hammered they may come across a better example. this system could also help with I.D.s
anyway just a thought.  what do you guys think?

I'd like to run with this idea obviously I would have to clear it with Geoff first. What do you think guys / Gals. Anyone fancy helping me with the categories?

great idea -- as for the categories there are so many titles to develop .. could mean a lot of work

coins of each king/queens reign -- where do you start from
roman coins of each emperor? -- big job
staters
foreign coins, indian, french, etc
brooches, roman, anglo saxon, medieval
eyes only finds
household artefacts - knives spoons, etc
pipe tampers,
horseshoes
buckles
bells
weights - loom, spindle whorls

it all needs a lot of careful thought
how about pictures of local scenery
etc etc

Rob will need a lot of help if the project is to succeed

Handyman I don't think we need to have too many catagories, at least not to start with. Instead of every monarch we could group them Tudors, Stuarts etc. Then maybe generalise Roman, celtic etc. Then the buttons buckles and other artifacts. Similar to the UKDF database. It always seemed a shame to me that so many of the pics posted here get lost so quickly. If we had our own database then even the archies could see the input that even a relatively small, localised group of detectorists can have a big impact on filling in the gaps in our history. Thanks Rob for asking for feedback on this idea

Hi z

i agree with your comments entirely, i was just making sure that everyone who reads the post is fully aware of the amount of work it will involve.

what we could do is to start the recording process from say jan 2010, so ppl can put their finds up into the relevant sections, and then think about recording the previous years finds.

that way, one can quickly see what needs adapting, fine tuning etc. will the database have a search facility? hope so.
cheers and thx for the opportunity to reply.

great idea tho.

Alan agree with you totally, a lot of work would be needed and would be loath to put a heavier work load onto any of the ppl who already do an outstanding job here. Im sure we can all help in making it work if that's what members want

Good , glad theres positive reaction to your idea Kev. I've already had the go ahead from Geoff so its now a case of finalising the categories and working out to dispaly these categories in the Gallery in an easy to navigate format.

Rob, can i respectively suggest\we start with finds posted up from 2010 -- get the system in place, tweak it accordingly, then we can work it back respectively over time.

it will certainly ease the pressure!

cheers

Hi Rob
Great idea from Zorro and I'm sure you can work with the Idea and get it into a workable interesting Data Base ;0)

Its very true that some great finds have disappeared into the ether never to be seen again !

Like my Hoard of Gold nobles and my resent pot full of Staters or my ......... Tongue Grin

great work Rob and Zorro ;0)
