What about a section on the forum for 'eyes only' guys..

Flints, clay pipes, pottery , tiles glass ect.  These can be very good to date a site and recognising these peices on the surface of a ploughed field or during digging a signal  may well give valuable clues on what you can expect to find.

it is well known that swansea bay area was forested. from sketty lane to brynmill arch, if you walk the sand/mud line, you will come across the remains of a sunken forest [almost opposite the university]

in marchthis yr, after the recent storms, the mud had been washed out revealing layer upon layer of twigs and cart tracks, dating back to early bronz age. it was well reported on the bbc wales website.

i well recall being in school in swansea and part of our lesson was to walk down to the beach and view the sunken forest remains.

apart from the wave cut platforms that are clearly visible from the bay, there are many more interesting features about the bay. [mumbles lighthouse area are great examples of colapsed geological stacks].

cheers

thx viv -- i saw the pic u posted earlier this yr. lovely find - even my mum was impressed!

there is a huge potential around the entire bay, however the tide can catch people out as there are many small sandbanks in the bay, not to mention the quicksand!!

oystermouth was a port in its own right, long before the port of swansea was built. ships were well sheltered in the lee of the mumbles headland. knab rock was a useful loading and unloading point.

for those who like their stats  .. swansea bay has the second highest natural tide rise and fall, in the world, [thunder bay in canada, tops it.]

Good idea Rob.  I am not very good at identifying pottery etc that can get ploughed up - it would be handy to learn so that I can get an idea about the age of a prospective site.
