Just get a pound coin and slide it down the side of the battery, but remember that the greater the range the less "pinpoint" you have

 Doesn`t that sorta defeat the object of having your PIN POINTER being a pinpointer then ?  Grin Grin
 I zero in with the coil ,& then let my pin pointer finalize the last few centimeters.

The other trick is to reduce the sensitivity by turning it on close to a large signal to balance it out during the tune-up phase. Then you can pinpoint the bigger items better in deep holes.

Now I wonder if you combine this technique with the pound coin trick whether or not you get the best of both worlds? I think I might have to experiment again tomorrow...
