I presume you mean a ligula, this is far too big for that and they have a bowl granted very shallow but this has none  or at least it doesn't seem too. Jassy is there any bowl depression at all? To me it looks like the handle of a kitchen utensil.

optical illusion, that is a shot of the dip of the bowl ,will try and take another pic....
geoff is looks like a spoon on one end.....with a dip in it.it definately looks like it was made that size with no loss ,as in it wasnt a bigger bowl that has broken...

Ahh now that's better, still not a clue mind you but better lol. Is the edge of the bowl decorated? it almost looks scalloped.
While I know there's an exception too every rule, the rule or norm is that flat section spoons with a splayed rear end don't make an appearance until the the early 18th century (1720's).
But as to what it's use was I'm not sure as the handle is quite oversized for the bowl.

Admittedly it is a bit thicker than the known roman examples but the "handle" end is obviously intended to give a good grip while using the spoon end to extract something from a vessel that is long and narrow. looks like a decorative line continuous around the spoon edge runs off up the handle too.

The only spoon I have in my ensemble that has similar proportions is an Olive spoon, given the decoration then it was obviously meant for table service rather than being stuck in a kitchen, just trying to imagine it all polished up. What other foods do people pyknic with at the beach that comes in a jar?????????

The cross section of the main handle is pretty flat and the end isnt curved and scooped so its not a shoe horn. Maybe a back scratcher and the spoon end is a finger grip?

There is a definite mounting line across the spoon-end, maybe it IS a ladel handle but the big spoon section which should be welded to the end has snapped off?

I don't know, but I am going to bed now so sort it out amongst yourselves.

Hi Jan, You've got them going with your weird handle. What funny minds men have got !!!!

My opion is that it is def. a soup ladle handle. I had one that did exactly the same. Back in the 60's when I got married one of my wedding presents was a wall mounted rack of cooking utensils and the first casualty was the ladel. The 'head' just came off leaving me with a useless handle.
It could just be a throw out and could have washed into the sea anywhere and been swept along the beaches till it deceided to just wait for you. ;D

p.s. could it be pewter. It certainly seems to have some age to it. Would have been good quality in it's day.

I Googled Antique Soup spoons and trolled through a few. You can see where the handle joined the bowl on some and they are just like yours. Also a mixture of others, like puch ladles and strainers. All very interesting. Oh, and anything from 1700's through to 1900's. and mostly silver and pewter.
