My GM3+ came too late for Ludlow but our first find today caused us to scratch our heads. Any ideas? It looks like its got some decoration. Its a hard heavy metal, not lead.
Cheers

It certainly looks like a spindle whorle, but the fact that its a heavy metal could mean its something else. I'm sure someone will have a correct id, whatever it is its a very nice find well done m8  Wink

From the picture it looks almost certainly, this is without doubt ,a "Spindle whorl" . A not so common design , but highly collectable by the people who do collect spindle whorls.  A nice example .

I agree with Jeb, this is a spindle whorl. There are few of this type known and it would be worth recording. Here's one on PAS:

That's great, ours has five lugs. Here is another one http://www.finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/249121
I started to think it was a lead alloy when I could see silver scratches with some copper tarnish. Obviously the colouring is from lead carbonate.
Many thanks to everyone who replied. Going back to the same place tomorrow  Grin
