Me and Ron managed a couple of hours this morning on the same pasture that we've detected on the last couple of outings.  It's only about half an acre but keeps on producing the goods.  Ron had a back ache today so we didn't stay too long.  We are both pleased as punch with our new detectors, we've had them a month now and have found lots of coins, some silver, some artefacts and scrap.  Today I found 3 bits of silver, a nice silver ring (2 stones missing), a silver leaf and a piece of decorated silver band.  Alongside this I had a lead whorl, bronze thimble, iron axe head, button, bullet and 10 coins (all grotty).  Ron managed 8 coins, a whorl and some other bits and pieces.  I don't know how many times we will be able to visit this small field until it is completely void of finds.  But until then we'll always 'pop in' because it's not to far from our homes.  Happy digging!!!   Tom

Well done Roughneck. A very productive couple of hours digging.
It's quite possible that your piece of silver and the odd thing next to the thimble were once related.  The odd thing is the bit that the spines of an umbrella or parasol would have gone into and the silver strip would have been around the handle. Or it could have been around a walking stick. Always nice to find.

Thanks everyone.  It's so nice to get feedback on our finds.  I didn't know it is a marcasite silver ring, or that the castle shaped thing next to the thimble is part of an umbrella which may have gone together with the silver band.  Such great info and some insight into what might have been.   I too like the axe head Val, it's small and perhaps quite old? 
Me and Ron are managing to get out for a mid week dig close to home and a bit of travelling to farms we used to shoot on at weekends.  Also picking up some new farms whilst we're in the vicinity of others.  We are thoroughly enjoying our escapades and get quite excited when we turn up something that's historical, unusual or with any precious metals.  No gold as yet, but time will tell.  Our collections are growing fast and taking up lots of shelf and cupboard space.    What shall we do with it all??  I'll have to start making display cases perhaps!  Anyone got any plans for display cases?

Eventually you'll have to make up your mind what is and isn't worth keeping.  I made it a rule to keep everything I'd found in each field in a separate ice cream tub just in case the Farmer asked what I'd found. I had them all over the house. I was laid up for 3 months last year and out of sheer boredom I decided to have a sort out.  I was amazed how much rubbish I'd saved, mostly iron, which had dried out and was flaking, it all went out.
This pic was my kitchen window sill back in those days.  I notice there's a bigger version of the umbrella thingy. Took me ages to find out what it was.
Must admit I had more fun when I dug every signal.
