Title: Re: the 2 cs in charlie Post by: Val Beechey on July 11, 2020, 07:09:26 PM Don’t know much about coins but wondered if it might be an over-strike or maybe something to do with coins struck after his death.
I had a quick look and couldn’t see one with a triangle. Maybe Roland will know more when he sees it. Title: Re: the 2 cs in charlie Post by: Dungbeetle on July 11, 2020, 09:19:05 PM I think the triangle mm is for the tower mint 1639 to 1640.
Title: Re: the 2 cs in charlie Post by: The Doc on July 11, 2020, 10:29:56 PM Nice coin. It has been partially mis-struck, with doubling of several parts of the design, such as the 'VI' of the denomination as well as the 'C' of 'CAROLVS'

These coins were struck with a roller press - and often shifted between 'strikes'. some of the earlier strikings survive in areas where the pressure wasn't as high in the later strike or where there was an uneven flan. Nice find. Never found a Charlie shilling. What and when was the roller press introduced, so these are not really hammered coins? |
