Title: How to clean the crud off this hammered? Post by: trys on March 12, 2009, 10:43:10 PM Hi all, im after advice on how to safely clean the brown layer of crud from this coin. I've tried the old tinfoil method, but there is no reaction at all. I've had a few like this. Any ideas please?

Guess it'll have to stay like it then as I dont want to ruin it. I've let it soak for a while to see if it softens it, but it looks like it's not gonna shift. It's weird that i gt no reaction from the tin foil!

the coin has an oxide coating on it .firstly is the coin id'd second if it has is it worth much .thirdly if it is not then and only then pin prick a very small bit if it removes a tiny bit of oxide then get silver /aluminium foil add siliva it should work then but be warned it can take a few seconds only. but if you like it leave it it may look worse if you remove the oxide there again it may look superb depends on the oxide type. Post by: The Doc on March 13, 2009, 07:29:04 PM Ed Besly gave a talk at Cardiff Scan on Wednesday and he showed pictures of coins that had a heavy rust deposit that was resistant to everything and eventually they cleaned them with a laser. Don't try it at home though ;D
