Title: Horse Brass or Brooch?
Post by: Sexy Legs (Leighton) on January 22, 2010, 08:54:25 PM
I found this while out today. It looks to me like either a horse brass or a brooch. There are two holes on the rear for an attachment pin to fit across. Also, if you look closely you'll see there is decoration on it. I'm new at this, so could the Doc or anyone help shed some light on what it is? Thanks.

Thats a really nice find fella, hit the ground running there, got some age to it as well . I would not say its a brooch, too delicate for a buckle ?  Not sure mate , someone will know.

Nice find. It looks more like a Georgian shoe buckle to me, but the attachment holes are confusing me. Can you post a pic of the back please?

Thanks, Ace. My first proper find. But, truth be told, I was really hoping to find a Roman coin, lol.

I am positive that the same as some other members, it is a Georgian shoe buckle- not too disimilar to the Artois style ones. Nice find!

I'd agree with Peter, definitely a Georgian shoe buckle,on the back there should be two small holes in the frame where the centre pin would be,nice find these type of buckles don't survive very well.

You'll have to excuse my ignorance, guys, but if it is a Georgian shoe buckle roughly what date would that be? Thanks.

This type of buckle is roughly 1720-1790.

as this appears to be a delicate buckle it could be a slide buckle for a dress belt

lovely to see a whole one . Ive found fragments of this design on land with late tudor finds. I agree that its probably shoe buckel, as my examples were too flimsy for horse fitting.
