Title: Lead Curses
Post by: herbie on May 29, 2012, 05:28:20 PM
Have got a couple of nice examples of these and was wondering how many others had found them and if anyone has ever unrolled one? I haven't tried as yet. These things fascinate me, I know the Romans used them a lot, but they were still in use much later, which I suppose is why it's so difficult to date them. The only way to tell would be to unroll one and see what if anything was written on the inside.

That's the problem, some are just scrap lead. The proof of the pudding is in the unrolling ;) I've also found loads but as yet all have been just scrap :'(

Have found lots of rolled lead which as chef said is just scrap but these are the only ones i have found so tightly rolled with markings on, debating on whether to try and unroll one!! dont want to break it!! or release the curse :o :o :o

Maybe they're blank because few people could read and write, and simply the act of rolling the lead and marking it represented the curse???

I have never found one either but think they are fascinating. I believe they excavated a few at Caerleon roman baths. It is always worth opening every folded bits of lead as you never know what you will find inside. If you haven't already read it I would recommend the article by Brian Read in the Searcher April 2012 titled 'It May Not Be What It Appears To Be!'

I have unrolled the 2nd (better) piece of lead, I can't see any inscription, but there are definite markings, any ideas?
