Hi Mike, I have not heard of a beach rally for many years. Back in the 70's-80's they used to be quite common but since then beach detecting has become a minority aspect of the hobby and so I don't think the interest is there to hold one.

what if a couple of times a  year there was a rally to a popular beach and all the clubs finds where given to a deserving charity.i.e cancer research. :)gold rings could be auctioned off.it would also give members who dont normaly do the beaches a chance to see what its all about.only a thought.

Downside to your idea is that the Beach Licence states we're sposed to hand finds in to the Police.

Val,  Not all beaches need the licence, only the ones owned by the natural trust.

We at the Rhondda club have a beach rally every new year,    a few years ago now the N.C.M.d  had one at Aberavon beach for us,

Hi Al

What was it I downloaded from the Crown Office. I was under the impression that all beaches were owned by the Crown and although the licence is free, you do need one. This gives permission to detect from mean high water downwards. The beaches not under their control are ones like National Trust, M.O.D.ect.( who lease from the Crown) from whom separate permission should be sought. (NO CHANCE)  and above high water is the local Councils.
Have I got it wrong???
Interesting point that should be made clear dont you think. Do you know if anyone has ever been prosecuted ?

what about when the police hand the finds back ,then they could be auctioned off for charity.

Hi Mike

As a beach Detecting fan Im up for anything involving Beach combing.

As Alan pointed out we  RARE hold an annual Winter beach token hunt.
Its free for our members and this year everyone brought a prize with them, one lucky lady went home with 4 or 5 bottles or wine Hic!
and i won a new Detecting shovel and a plastic coin case.

Im all for charitable giving (im always in the charity shops) but lets put a few pounds in and lets have some great prizes for a token hunt, as depending on the amount of sand on the beach  detectorists could come away with very little in the way of natural finds.
Another point It would have to be held in the winter because you cant risk the rally being held on a nice sunny summers day because you'd be detecting over half naked nubile young woman (perish the thought lol  Tongue)
Our winter token hunt only attract 20 to 30 members so its not a problem but remember to watch out for the dog mess, apparently you need a licence to detect but you can let your Dog sh@t all over the place !

Only to put a few fact's right,as you would all know by now i work for the local council,my place of work is running port talbot beach,as beach c/o,there is no permit or licence needed for this beach, any club wishing to do something on the beach at porttalbot, are welcome, the only one thing that you would have to do is to make sure you'r insurance is up to date, and inform the council that you would like to do it and to give the right away to the lifeboat if launched, wich i know everyone would, for any more on this please ask with regards sehawk, richie.
