Title: Do you remember your first hammered coin you found?
Post by: Neil on December 23, 2009, 05:32:43 PM
Trawling through my pc this evening I came across a pic of my first hammered coin I ever found.

I was with Mark and Jaydogg at the time in the Glorious VOG and I wasn't 100% sure it was a hamster. They soon put me right. Turned out to be Henry III. I was already hooked on detecting, but it  took me 7 months to find my first! What do you know the next week I had a clipped Groat of Henry V! Found with the wonderful Minelab Muskateer - a cracking machine and cheap as chips to buy second hand these days.

Do you remember your first hammie? Got a photo? Whos still waiting for one? How long?

Cheers
Neil

Yeah lol - it was approx 12metres away from the other finds in the garden.  Between me and my father - we have found

Forgery of a GEO III or IV shilling  (1760-1820)
Queen Elizabeth Sixpence (1582)
William IV Silver Fourpence (1836)
Henry VII Sovereign Penny (1485-1509)

The house is 34 years old so no history or old buildings for about 1mile.  There is a dewpond in the field that is shown on the 1886 map.

I have some negatives somewhere, yes it was that long ago, I had been detecting for about 5 years without a sniff, then I got permission to detect a old 2 acre Glebe field in the middle of a small village, which was due for development, first day I found a Edward I farthing Which you could blow off your hand it was that worn. Over the next 10 months I recovered 164 coins from that 2 acres, 72 being hammered.
A site that dreams are made of, My detector at the time was a new Compass Coin Scanner, which was the new big thing that year, and in my mind is still the best detector that I ever owned, which goes to show that many field reports and personal recommendations on detectors are based as much as anything on the site as on the detector.

The frustrating thing was that I had waited a year for the builders to start work on the site, went on holiday for 2 weeks, came back and half the top soil had gone. A month later I went to a club meeting were 2 members were showing 3 hammered coins they had found in a delivery of top soil, yes, it was from my site, and they only had 2 ton of it.

No fairytale amazing coin for my first, but here it is, a Lizzie threepence, very worn and battered but I was chuffed to bits about getting something so old. It was found on Cardiff Scan Club land after I'd been detecting for about five months, with my White's Classic III. Picture shows the reverse, unfortunately the head side is completely gone.

My first (and my brothers too) was a Charles I shilling.  We both chipped in to buy a Viking VK10 when we first started so guess it was both our first hammered.
