Ian that still looks like a stunning buckle. You sure its not from Burtons? ;D

Well done the tall one.

Very nice object Ian. Would not commit to its period or if it is a buckle or something else like horse harness mount or something else. The bar down the left hand side does show signs of wear. Over to the Doc on this one I think.

Glad you said that Peter, never seen anything like it , very unusual , would guess that it was made in the locality, would be worth contacting their FLO for more info.

Cracking find - reminds me of a Saxon wrist clasp - except they tend to be more rectangular. Wonderful find all the same!

HI Phil yeah bullets all over the place mate,  you wouldn't believe it though,  it was freezing there till mid afternoon, the breeze i think.

Des, nawty you lol,  if its the same one, she was there a while too, i was walking her way, but when i saw her changed direction. i didn't want to embarrase her, she was looking at me before she went down. perhaps wishing i went away,  lol
i did see some guy walking up the other side of the fence to her towards her , i though oh oh, but she didn't hurry up any.

had a update from the museum tonight on the buckle they said:-
Quote
The buckle is difficult to closely parallel and the decoration on both faces may be seen as unusual. The style and form of the buckle may suggest a date in the early medieval period.
End Quote.
still more research needed to id nothing like this to compare it to, so i wait and hope.

They don't know either then Ian, at the moment you must consider that as a unique find, there are no parallels so they ain't gonna find anything at the moment. Can only think that it is a piece that has been designed for a specific purpose and in some ways it is quite crude!
A lovely find which you may never be able to tie down, a bit arts and craftsy for the period so made locally I would guess.
