Title: Detectingwales Rally 43 - "T-shirts in November . . . you're having a laugh!"
Post by: Neil on November 14, 2011, 06:47:42 PM
Around 60 Detectingwales members ventured back to a Cardiff East site on Saturday for a days rallying swathed in beautiful sunshine! Not sure whats going on with the weather, as this time last year we were all detecting in snow! Today though most of us were detecting in t-shirts and I even saw a pair of shorts!

Quick overview of the previous two rallies, some Health & Safety and we were into the fields and stubbles.

When we arrived the farmer had told me that we were also able to detect the pasture in front of hir farm house. Now this small field was full of all kinds of lumps and bumps and included a natural spring. I commented to a few people that it looked promising and so it was to prove as within the first half hour of detecting Staterchaser had pulled out a middle Bronze Age Palstave Axe! It was missing its blade. but is still a lovely find, and Ceri was rightfully pleased with it. We tried in vain, but the rest of it alluded us.

The next find of note was a sixpence to myself dated 1922 - I am having a run on sixpences at the moment. I also had a further 7 coppers throughout the day including a Nice George IV penny from the 1820's.

The first hammered coinage of the day fell to Mike The Fob and he quickly followed it with a George III sixpence. well done Mike on your first DW Rally hammered find. Mikes Charity Bucket also took a bit of a hammering on the day and weighed a fair bit at the end.

Rambo was also in the mood for silver having found a bit dented to say the least Georgian hallmarked silver spoon. I think it is repairable and he should give it a go.

Another hammered coin popped up courtesy of Casa Dos in bizzare circumstances. He intially found half of it, as alas the plough had recently chopped it in half. A real shame as it was in mint condition. Casa marvelled at his first find and then manmaged a few minutes later to find the other half. A cracking coin literally!

OzzieHeadJo also found a Victorian bun head shilling in the same field. It was her first Vicky Shilling so she was pretty pleased.

A coin ring made out of a Edwardian penny popped up, along with a Vicky groat (Joey Chef!} for Passingclod, a three feathers button for PaulyWOW, a Grotius Romnanus and medieval belt stud  for Rollingstone & GI Jan, a saddle plate from the area for Rookypair (well donbe Brian for lending Mr Rookypair a machine)and numerous other milled coinage, buckles, musket balls and the like.

It was a good day out and great to see a gathering of DW members in such fantastic November weather. I got a feeling that may be the last of the t-shirt rallies for a while.

See you in a field soon and happy hunting.

Neil

great write up Neil again.
Found the Henry 6th saturday on the rally ,as i will tell you about how i found this coin of two half's you wont believe me,so glad i had witnesses of farmer steve,jeff64,melonhead & ozzyhead jo to the find, found the one half first and gridded around for a while then walked away but came back about 15 minutes later and others had be around that area as well, so started looking around again and about 5 to 10 minutes found the other half what's the odds against that ,pity it as been it by the plough but in great condition other wise . added a few clod shots as well.the worm got in on the photo as well. ;D

Good to see you as always Viv.

Last time we were in Wraxal I think you brought me luck in the way of a James sixpence - I'll make sure to stay on the left of you again mate a week Sunday!

Cheers
Neil
