Title: Peat Bog Detecting
Post by: Jonola (Jon) on April 11, 2009, 01:22:36 PM
There is an area of really marshy, peaty bogland near me. It is uneven ground and on a hillside. Very bleak and barren. Anyone ever detected in this type of ground? Any tips? Doesn't look the kind of area a human has ever set foot on....but you never know!

Lots of bronze age and celtic votive offerings have been  discovered in peat bogs around springs on stream banks etc I  personlly would look at a map of the local  and if accessable have a good look around the springs prime spots to search the old adage springs to mind no pun intended  ::) like looking for a needle in a haystack when searching a peat bog ??? mole

Thanks for the tips. At least I'm not expecting to detect much scrap metal! I have some local maps from 1841 and 1881 and can't see any sign of habitation except for two small farm houses.

If your going anywhere near the Tregaron bog in west Wales and get a large iron signal,it's a lost Hy-mack excavator, aparently the electricity board lost it while putting in a new power-line,i walked across there years ago and it's not for the faint harted, might be worth wearing a life jacket Jon lol,i've heard stories of second world war air craft dissapearing in to bogs never to be seen again :o,but on the brighter side there was a hoard of roman coins found in a bog near Aberystwyth a few years ago,and as Mole says a lot of Bronze age finds have come from bogs, good luck if you make it back let us know how you get on ;D
