Title: Hammered Richard or Henry for ID please
Post by: Radnor Bandit (Ian) on July 21, 2014, 10:16:30 AM
Found yesterday heavily clipped hammered. Any ideas ?
It has Quatrafoil in centre of reverse and pellet before C of Civitas.
Many thanks Ian

Is there a annulet on breast? look before CIVI and you will see a annulet, I got my thought but will have a better look later ;)

Its pretty much the same as a coin I have in my collection, also with the annulet before CIVI

Sorry Dale, I seemed to have got my pellets confused with my annulets.  :-[
Yes there is an annulet before C of Civitas. Not sure about one on the breast though as the obverse is too worn to make out.
Many thanks though for sorting the I D, Which king is it please ?
Cheers Ian

Sorry Ian, I see you spotted the annulet before CIVI I only had a very quick look I was in a mad rush yesterday, I had a drink after work, but it did not go well with the sun and heat or the wife so it was best not to be on DW all night :D

Anyway the coins reverse looks to be Henry IV very similer to my example annulet before CIVI, iv checked Richard II York pennys and cant find a example with a annulet before CIVI only a pellet, the obverse is worn but most are like that with flattened legends and clipped, its possibly a Henry IV Light coinage York penny.
This is my example a little double struck, but note the annulet on breast, Spink 1734 your bust looks different to mine though, it is a tough one ;)

Many thanks again Dale for such a detailed answer,
I have had another look at mine and comparing it with yours there is a possible ghost of an annulet on breast. (knowing where to look is very useful).
The right hand shoulder as viewed is almost identical as well, especially where it meets the inner ring.
Its very much appreciated.
Cheers Ian

Ian I thought this example was close to yours with the thin face and pointed chin, the hair is slightly different though, it is easy to mix these coins up with the more common issues what looks similar......I also thought I could see ghosting of a annulet :D

If it is Henry IV it is a rare coin, it books at £450 in fine.. I have a book here and it says the average condition is VG to about fine, fine or better are rare :)

I also saw the Henry IV values in Spinks, though if this is one I would think it would be worth a lot less than fine. Most likely only a collection filler in this condition.    :(  :(
