Title: Little and Large and a bit of silver too Post by: Chef Geoff on November 07, 2012, 04:48:41 PM Not managing to get out half as much as in past years as headphone building seems to be taking every waking hour. Today however I had run out of parts and the suppliers have only just managed to send them out which meant that I escaped for 3 hours this afternoon.
So back to Nicks hoard field it was, though it proved very very quiet apart from some deep bits of lead. The next door field however was a different story with first a Sestertius/As then a radiate and finally Denarius all in the space of half an hour. The Denarius is the 5th from quite a small area so I may have to hand them over for treasure :( Title: Re: Little and Large and a bit of silver too Post by: Pipster on November 07, 2012, 05:11:16 PM Nice going Geoff ... yet another Denarius ... and what a stunner, a good three hours work well done, Lets hope you get to keep it !!!! Ummmmmmmm is that the trusty Ultimate I see there ;) ;)

Title: Re: Little and Large and a bit of silver too Post by: Chef Geoff on November 07, 2012, 07:20:13 PM And just to keep it in the family, the Denarius is of his mother Julia Mamaea
Title: Re: Little and Large and a bit of silver too Post by: handyman [Alan} on November 07, 2012, 07:21:44 PM the origin of 'Mama Mia' perhaps!! ;D ;D ;D

Title: Re: Little and Large and a bit of silver too Post by: probono on November 10, 2012, 08:08:24 PM The little coin looks like an Ant of Claudius Gothicus (c. 270AD) - the large coin is as you say a sestertius of Severus Alexander - the reverse legend shows 'P M TRP X'..... so it is from 231AD - I didn't look too closely at the personality, but it's quite possible it is Providence. Nice to find the denarius of Mamaea too.
A sestertius is definitely on my list of things I'd like to find - must have given quite a signal. What date were the other denarii that you found from? Title: Re: Little and Large and a bit of silver too Post by: Chef Geoff on November 10, 2012, 08:49:00 PM Strangely enough the Sestertius gave an awful signal that I could have easily missed but it was a bit oblique and deep.
Unfortunately all the Deni's are early 3rd :-\ Though I have found a silver (poor) Antoninianus and a Billon denari of Postumas so I'm hoping this will show more a trading area rather than a deposition.
