Title: Re: Lizzy Shilling Post by: hotmill on July 29, 2015, 11:37:29 AM Could have a hole for several reasons so I've read, deliberate defacement in protest at her persecution of Catholics? atached to a string to prevent loss? attachment to clothing as a touchpiece? sure I've also read somehwere it might be due to the changeover from hammered to milled coinage so remaining hammered coins where pierced to indicate they were hammered and had a limited circulation time left before milled coinage took over completely?

Could have been, the damage on the reverse looks like it was up against something when it was pierced.
