We received this as a Wedding gift in 2005 and it is silver and gilt. They have been given for thousands of years.  Thats all I am telling you! ;D

Lots of good answers, but its actually a stylised Jewish shofar (silver display one). The shofar is traditionally a rams horn that is used as a horn (you blow it} for religious purposes and is probably one of the earliest intruments known to man. We received this one as a wedding gift as they also symbolise luck.
