This is the story I told Casa Dos and Dig it (Kev and Ade) that they said I should share with you all. So here goes.
I thought "Planning" that's what it's all about so off to the net I went. I bought two old maps of an area local to me. One from the late 18th century and one from early 19th. I spent a few nights reading up from my extensive library on an area of ancient woodland and looking for any lumps or bumps on aerial pics that may show something worthy of my interest.
After hours and hours of research I set out on my quest. The area had an ancient parish with an adjoining woodland that was mentioned i mediaeval accounts. I was definitely onto something!
I walked for a long time through dense undergrowth to find the clearing that was my goal. The path was very overgrown and it seemed that no human had ventured this way for centuries! I was getting that tingling sensation! I was definitely onto something!
I started to grid the area like a true professional. No strimmer swinging. Slow and low and not a centimetre missed.
Eureka! Bang in my designated search area I had a strong signal! Ancient woodland, mediaeval history, no way a human could fight his way to this small clearing without a machete!
I dug feverishly and saw a glint of metal. A torque? A dress hook? a seal matrix perhaps....
As I dug further it became clear to me what it was...
A flaming mattress from a single bed. All that was left was the rusting metal hulk.
How it came to be several miles from any modern day abode and in a spot that was TOTALLY inaccesible to any form of transport beats me.
But it has given Casa Dos and Dig It a good laugh (At my expense)
