Title: Return to Darkest Herefordshire. ( Tafflaff hits the Jackpot )
Post by: waltonbasinman on October 30, 2009, 07:33:32 PM
As plan A, B and C have come and gone during the last week, Plan D was put into action today and was basically a last minute decision. A fresh field today greeted  Rob (Tafflaff), Casa dos and Collegwent as I arrived later due to a last minute venue switch and a host of other things on my part. On a mild and warmish day off I set to be met by the deadly trio already in the finds with the pick being a die I think that was for stamping the Kings portrait on something. George 2nd I think and definitely not a coin as it had a slightly concave face with the head and legend in reverse. We had been detecting for about an hour when over the crest of the hill came Rob with the Item I have pictured below. Made of silver I recognised the symbols straight away and knew what it was but I will let Rob tell all when he speaks later. TRUST ME FOLKS HE HAS FOUND AS FAR AS I AM AWARE SOMETHING UNIQUE THAT WILL GO INTO THE TEXT BOOKS  The rest of the day was spent finding coins, thimbles, and again lead by the bucket load and a good assortment of other things. Below is the find of the decade in my eyes. Lok and enjoy.

"WoW" Rob ! ; :o
"[A Templar Knight] is truly a fearless knight, and secure on every side, for his soul is protected by the armour of faith, just as his body is protected by the armour of steel. He is thus doubly armed, and need fear neither demons nor men."

Bernard de Clairvaux, c. 1135.

An Incredible Find Fella ! ; ;)

Ok , done a very small foil test and there was a slight eggy smell. So silver I guess it is.

Apart from the Ring I had  the following,

Load of Pre Dec coinage including a Cartwheel

1 lead token
1 trade weight
Crescent brooch
Morris Oxford car lapel badge
some interesting buttons.

Hi Rob. You are right, probably best to contact Mark in the first instance, and he will inform you about what you need to do. I am sure he will have the contact details for the coroner, but he may ask you to to get in touch with the coroner yourself.

Place the ring on your finger at your own peril :o :o

Got visions of Rob turning into....

Sir Rob of Tafflaff (a Knights Templar) and turning up at the next DW rally

Here are my finds from the day. Have omitted the ton of lead I found but I am sure you all know what Lead looks like.Oldest coin a 1766 George 3rd Halfpenny  and also my first detector found cartwheel dated 1799 I think. Found two previously but surface eyes finds.

an interesting fact about cartwheel penny's is that they all have the date 1797 on them, yet they were minted over a 6 year period to 1803... they couldn't be bothered to change the date!!

cheers

No it ain,t Rob. The Red Herefordshire clay is usually kinder. Makes me think its not so much the soil and more what has been added to the soil when its been ploughed.

Small update on the ring . Sent pics of it to a specialist in Medieval artifacts today and he came back with a very firm 12th Century. Obviously thats without seeing it in the flesh but it certainly puts Walton Basin mans Date bang on the nose.

Would you say folks that this is a George 3rd Irish halfpenny. I can see the Harp and Crown on the reverse and the 17 is clear on the date but is it 66 on the other two numbers. The neck is most visible on the obverse but the neck is undraped and very slender which make me think female. Any suggestions folks.
